2 Posts at John Updike's passing: 2
Again from Ben’s post, this time a conversation between two ministers from Updikes novel Rabbit, Run: “Do you think this is your job, to meddle in these people’s lives? I know what they teach you at seminary now: this psychology and that. But I don’t agree with it. You think now your job is to be an unpaid doctor, to run around and plug up holes and make everything smooth. I don’t think...

2 Posts at John Updike's passing: 1
American novelist John Updike died recently. Ben at Faith & Theology wrote a post about his theology and specifically how Barth influenced his writing. Below is a wonderful poem on the resurrection. Make no mistake: if He rose at all it was as His body; if the cells’ dissolution did not reverse, the molecules reknit, the amino acids rekindle, the Church will fall. … Let us not mock God with...

Want to know about your MP / MSP / MEP?
Theyworkforyou is a brilliant site that tracks everything you could want to know about your elected representatives. It includes, among other things, voting records, speeches, expense claims, and registered interests. They really is no excuse for ignorance on this front, all you could want to know is right here. I have found out that on issues of policy I pretty much totally disagree with my...

I’d be interested to see the ad and try and identify what the BBc deemed contentious. The DEC are a pretty broad church the line about the delivery of aid seems odd.

Where the Wild Things Are
When one of you’re favourite authors (Dave Eggers) and directors (Spike Jonze) get together to make a film of a book you loved as a child (Where the Wild Things Are) then its big news. Due for an October release Where the Wild Things Are is probably the book/film/album I’m looking forward to most in 2009. So far the films been plagued with problems but it now looks like tits on...

24 Season 7
Great start to the new season. Renee Walker (above) is a cool new character and brilliant revelations about who the baddies are this time round (although they did stuff up the reveal, I knew who it was pretty fast, and I’m thick). Roll on the next 22 hours!

Design a new Eustace Tilley
The New Yorker says: Eustace Tilley was drawn by Rea Irvin, the magazine’s first art editor, for the cover of the first issue of The New Yorker, in 1925, and has returned for nearly every anniversary issue since. (Louis Menand gives a detailed history of Tilley.) Since 1994, the magazine has invited contributing artists to reinterpret this iconic dandy. A selection of these visual riffs appears...

Today while in town I say a pro-Palestine (anti-Israel?) protest going on. Talking to a great friend recently has helped shape my thinking, and I have, like many, reached the conclusion that no matter what the provocation, the way Israel is responding is immoral, unjustified and must stop. This brief article from Naomi Klein lays out the arguments for and against a boycott of Israel. Certainly...
